South Fulton incorporation meeting tonight

Advocates of forming a city out of the unincorporated south Fulton County are gearing up for another push in this year’s legislative session.

Rep. Roger Bruce, D-Atlanta, has filed House Bill 27, which would allow residents to vote on incorporating this year. As written, the bill calls for a vote in March. But Bruce has acknowledged the vote will be pushed back, probably to November. The delay would allow Atlanta and other cities a chance to annex parts of the unincorporated area.

There were several community meetings on the issue last fall, and more are planned. Tonight County Commission Chairman John Eaves will host a discussion at 6 p.m. at Wolf Creek Library, 3100 Enon Road SW, Atlanta.

The Coalition of South Fulton Now will hold another meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at Kingdom of God Evangelical Outreach, 4590 Welcome All Road, College Park.

Residents overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to incorporate in 2007. But supporters say it’s time to try again, citing the need to control the area’s zoning and other decisions affecting the community.

A similar bill passed the state House of Representatives last year but died without a vote in the Senate.
