Snow in metro Atlanta: Extreme northwest suburban interstates starting to freeze

Interstate 75 was flowing smoothly inside metro Atlanta at 6 p.m. Wednesday, but a little farther north the picture was not quite so rosy.

Cameras stationed along I-75 by Georgia Department of Transportation showed that snow was creeping over from the shoulders into the travel lanes, making only two of three lanes passable in some parts of Bartow, Cherokee and Gordon Counties and points northward.

Several accidents have been reported near I-75 at Glade Road in Acworth, and some secondary accidents have followed, causing a snarl along that stretch.

Elsewhere around the metro Atlanta area, the sun was setting and temperatures were expected to continue dropping. GDOT officials are watching closely to determine where to dispatch road crews if icing starts to occur. So far, road crews are not spreading gravel and salt in the main lanes, but all the interstates and state routes have been brined with a saltwater solution that helps prevent freezing, said Karlene Barron, spokeswoman for GDOT.
