While the precipitation was initially rain in parts of metro Atlanta, it began as snow in west Cobb County around 2 p.m.

In Dunwoody, streets were quickly jammed as workers began heading home at the first sign of snow.

Outside WSB-TV studios in Midtown, big, fluffy snowflakes were falling about 2:30 p.m.

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for disaster preparedness starting at 2 p.m. Forecasters warn that the system could bring accumulations from around 2 inches in metro Atlanta to upwards of 6 inches in the mountain counties. Read more of our weather coverage and updates here.
