Former U.N. Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young is giving a character witness statement in support of the former Atlanta Public Schools defendants convicted in the test-cheating scandal.
Young, also a lifelong civil rights activist, has been a consistent supporter of the educators and former APS Superintendent Beverly Hall.
“I think these teachers got caught up in a trap,” he said.
Judge Jerry Baxter told Young he initially thought Young and many in Atlanta’s business community didn’t understand the scope and seriousness of the allegations.
“They just wanted it to go away,” Baxter said of the business community.
