State Sen. Freddie Powell Sims (D-Dawson) placed “Jimmy Carter for Cancer Survivor” signs along the road leading into Plains on Thursday afternoon  in advance of the former president’s return to his hometown.

Friends in Plains had the signs printed, inspired by a Mike Luckovich cartoon in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Carter announced Thursday he is suffering from melanoma that has spread to small lesions in his brain.
