The GBI announced Tuesday that it is investigating how con artists are using its phone number in a scam.
The state police agency’s main telephone line (404-244-2600) “has been compromised as a result of telephone spoofing,” the agency announced in an email.
“This is a scam that the GBI has been dealing with for approximately one month,” the email said. “When a telephone number is spoofed, the caller ID of the caller will appear to be coming from a valid number. In the cases specifically related to the GBI, the individual being called will see telephone number 404-244-2600.”
The scammers tell the people they call that they are with the GBI or IRS collecting a debt and warn there is a warrant out for the person’s arrest if they don’t pay a fine.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation does not do debt collection, the agency emphasized.
