The GBI Wednesday was investigating an officer-involved shooting at a subdivision near Woodstock.
Cherokee County sheriff’s Lt. Jay Baker said deputies were dispatched to a suicide threat call at a home on Olde Mill Trace in the Olde Mill Ford subdivision about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
“Due to the location of the call, responding deputies requested assistance from the Woodstock Police Department,” Baker said.
Officers learned an armed man, later identified by the GBI as 35-year-old William Candler of Woodstock, was inside the home with his wife and two children.
“Shortly after officers arrived on the scene, the wife and children safely fled the home,” Baker said.
As Woodstock police approached the residence, Candler exited the house and went to the front porch with a rifle, the GBI said.
“Police Officers issued verbal commands to drop the weapon,” the GBI said in a statement. “However, Candler raised the rifle at the officers at which time the officers fired at Candler.”
Candler was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
No officers or deputies were injured. However, the officers involved were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the GBI investigation.
